Data centre
Cooling and ventilation combinations for server rooms and edge data centres, where continuous sensible load and high ambient heat rejection set the selection.
What decides the design
- The load runs continuously and is dominated by sensible heat, so part-load behaviour and the ability to stage capacity matter more than a single design point.
- Heat rejection continues at high outdoor temperatures, which puts the condensing side of the system, not the indoor unit, at the centre of the selection.
- Redundancy is specified at unit level, so the layout has to allow one unit to be isolated and serviced while the room stays loaded.
- Small server rooms and telecom closets are frequently cooled after the fact, which makes available space, condensate removal and electrical capacity the binding constraints.
Recommended system combination
These families are selected together, not individually — the match between them is what makes the system work.
Rooftop Package Units
commercial equipment
Dedicated packaged cooling and outdoor-air treatment for the room, 3–30 ton, with higher static pressure options and BACnet or Modbus communication options.
Rooftop package units from 3 to 30 ton, with deep customisation up to 50–100 ton including DOAS and make-up air.
Chillers
commercial equipment
Chilled-water generation selected against the project cooling load, where the room is served by a central plant rather than packaged units.
Chillers selected against project cooling load, with supporting components and system design.
Modular Air-to-Water Chillers & Heat Pumps
commercial equipment
Modular plant where capacity is added in steps to follow a continuously loaded room, as an alternative to a single chiller.
Modular air-to-water chillers and heat pumps for staged-capacity heating and cooling projects.
Univer PIR Pre-Insulated Duct Panel
indoor air quality
Pre-insulated supply ductwork for runs through unconditioned space, in 20, 25 or 30 mm with a thermal conductivity of 0.021 W/m·K.
Sandwich duct panel of flame-resistant polyurethane and aluminium foil, offered as an alternative to traditional galvanised-iron ducting.
Motorized Dampers — MUD Series
ventilation
Outdoor-air and exhaust balancing dampers, 4" to 10", with flow-control adjustment.
Round motorized dampers for balancing fresh air against exhaust, with a silent 24 VAC hysteresis motor and spring return to closed.
Selection points
- 01
Establish the sensible load profile across the day and the year, not only the peak — how the load varies decides whether capacity should be staged or delivered by a single unit.
- 02
Decide the cooling architecture before selecting equipment: packaged direct-expansion, chilled water, or the room as a zone of a larger multi-zone system. Each route has a different electrical, piping and control interface.
- 03
If the room is on a BMS, confirm the protocol and points list at quotation. BACnet and Modbus communication options on the rooftop range are factory options, not field additions.
- 04
Where ductwork crosses unconditioned space, specify the panel thickness against the temperature difference and the run length; the pre-insulated PIR panel is available in 20, 25 and 30 mm with a working range of −50°C to 80°C.
- 05
For ducted distribution, confirm whether the aisles are fed from overhead or from a raised floor — it changes the static pressure the unit must develop and the diffuser selection.
- 06
Plan service access and isolation at layout stage: unit-level redundancy only works if a unit can be taken out of service, and a retrofit room usually keeps running through the changeover.
