Specifications →Design decisions behind this solution
- 01
Decide the retrofit path first. An add-on keeps the existing furnace or air handler as the air-moving and peak-heating source; dual-fuel runs the heat pump as primary with gas for cold periods; full replacement makes it the only heating source. The existing heat source, electrical service and whether the distribution handles lower supply temperatures decide which applies.
- 02
Fix the changeover and staging strategy at design stage: a dual-fuel system works with a staged auxiliary source, so the control has to run that sequence. The AFT533D covers 2-stage auxiliary heat, emergency heat and dual-fuel changeover.
- 03
Confirm the cold-climate operating point from the model. Capacity at the winter design temperature, defrost method and whether an auxiliary source covers the gap are confirmed per model on the submittal sheet.
- 04
Decide the water side early on hydronic projects: the mixing centre carries a temperature gauge with a matched pump, and the manifold, actuator and valve range distributes zones. Connection size and pressure rating are checked against the circuit.
- 05
Watch the furnace and coil interface when the furnace stays. The furnace range covers 2, 3, 4 and 5 ton at 95% AFUE, so air-moving capacity and plenum dimensions constrain the match as much as heat pump capacity.
How it connects to the rest of the system
- With air conditioning, the cased coil and plenum are shared between cooling and heating: the A-Coil range covers R-410A, R-32 and R-454B, the outdoor units R-410A or R-32. One refrigerant runs through the pair.
- A heat pump retrofit is where the thermostat is most often the missing item. Where the installed control cannot run dual-fuel staging, emergency heat and a humidity output, the AFT533D covers all three on 24V.
- Switching to a heat pump does not remove the ventilation requirement: the HRV or ERV selection stands, and the thermostat interlock and outdoor-temperature lockout keep the two working together.
- On the water side, the magnetic filter removes particles from the circuit and the AutoDip anti-freeze valve drains as the temperature approaches freezing; the mixing centre sets delivery temperature.
Common questions
Can a heat pump be added to a house that keeps its existing gas furnace?
Yes — that is the dual-fuel and add-on path, and the furnace range at 95% AFUE in 2, 3, 4 and 5 ton exists for it. Check whether the coil and plenum take the match, and whether the installed control runs the changeover.
Which refrigerants are available across the heat pump range?
Availability is per family: the side-discharge outdoor unit with R-410A or R-32, the furnace with R-454B, and the core heat pump parts supplied as components rather than a charged system.
What documentation do you provide for a cold-climate retrofit?
Capacity and selection data per model, and match data for a given outdoor unit and indoor coil, are issued on request. Certification evidence is issued only where we hold verified certificates, so raise that requirement at quotation.
